The announcement of the cancellation of the Buiding Schools for the Future programme has hit West London hard.
Michael Gove, the Eduation Secretary, announced that all school rebuild projects in the former Government's programme to renew all of the UKs Secondary Schools which had not reached financial close would be cancelled, even if, as in Ealing, a private sector partner had been chosen, meaning months of procurement and bidding effort is to be wasted.
The announcement does not affect those schools, like Wembley Academy, that are on site or that have lined up their funding with private sector partners. But it stops the rebuild of around 50 schools in the sub-region, which would have had an estimated £500m spent on them. It is also reported to ring the cancellation of LB Ealing's plans to build a brand new school on the former GlaxoSmithKline sports ground in Greenford, throwing the future of that site into confusion.
Only Harrow, which had just one school in the programme which has already progressed, is unaffected, although it is understood they were hoping to get more schools into the programme, which will now not happen.
No annnouncement was made in regard of the Primary School programme, but it is expected to be cut in the Autumn Spending Review.
