Plans approved for Earls Court as an Olympic Venue

LB Hammersmith & fulham, together with RB Kensington and Chelsea have approved plans to turn Earls Court into a 15,000 spectator arena for the 2012 Olympic Volleyball tournament.

Temporary seating will be installed, while at the back of the venue there will be a partition and facilities for athletes, officials and the media. All the temporary installations will be removed after 16 days of competition.

Cllr Greg Smith, Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, said: “Hammersmith & Fulham is privileged to be a host borough for London 2012 Olympics and I am delighted that permission has now been granted to transform Earls’ Court into a world-class volleyball facility. Earls Court already has a long Olympic association, having hosted wrestling, weightlifting, boxing and gymnastics when the Olympics were last here in 1948.”
